I hope you guys will bear with me here but I’m going to try something a bit different for a bit. Some of you know that I live in an area of Brisbane called Newstead. Newstead is known for once being a warehouse district, with many of the former “Woolstores” now converted into fancy, overpriced apartments for hipsters. Something else Newstead has in abundance is blank brick walls. . Given that, I thought I might go and snap some photos of some of the unused, boring aspects of my neighbourhood and see if I couldn’t make them a bit of a canvas, albeit only digitally. There’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said by others more eloquently and with greater gravitas, but every voice has value here. We don’t live in a society where these should be someone’s last words. That they were someone’s, and that they were said within earshot of people who could have helped and didn’t, is a tragedy. That the people who ignored these words are the same people we are meant to trust to keep us safe is extremely, unequivocally fucked. Not all cops are bad, but these aren’t cops - they are monsters in uniform. Those with the power to enact change clearly need a reminder of the value of a human life. A forest needs fires to clear out old, decaying undergrowth that prevents new growth from reaching the sunlight.
